Hi
I’m Sanjay, more commonly known as Yung Kari. “Kari” comes from the last four letters of my last name, and I’ll be turning 21 soon. I’d call that young.
I started making music when I was 16 (shoutout Still Candy for making me download GarageBand). Back then, I just saw it as something me and my friends did for fun. It wasn’t until college that I really discovered my love for making music. It was a rough time for me, and being able to express myself through art really helped.
Younger kari
I grew up in a house where the radio was always on. My parents listened to everything from The Beatles to Eminem. They’re old school like that. I used to know every word to Grenade by Bruno Mars, and I’d perform it at family gatherings. I started listening to my own music in middle school. I’d find songs on YouTube, download them from an illegal website, and upload them to Google Play Music. I was listening to Fetty Wap & Migos back then.
Older kari
I loved high school. I learned a lot about myself, I found my people, and I discovered my love for music. One of my favorite memories was when Uzi dropped Eternal Atake… MID DAY. Chaos ensued. Everyone and their mama was listening to that album. I was in social studies at the time, and my teacher decided to wrap up his lecture so everyone could listen to the album. Shoutout Coach P.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without my friends. I’m so grateful that I grew up with a bunch of people who are just as, if not more talented and creative than myself. I learned so much just being around them, and they always push me to be my best self and continue evolving. From fashion, to music, to the way I talk, to the way I live my life. I owe everything to them.

I also love music. I’ve never met someone as obsessive as myself. I collect vinyls. I listen to albums front to back. I watch hours of concert clips on YouTube, envisioning myself in their shoes. I’ll throw on a pair of headphones and listen to music for hours, reading the lyrics, replaying the same bridge over and over, studying. I live and breathe music.
